#49-50: Jordan Ifueko, Raybearer & Redemptor (Raybearer Duology #1-2)

This magical-girl, coming-of-age story set in a pseudo-African fantasy world is usually my kind of jam, and there were aspects of this I liked a lot, but I kept being annoyed by extreme characterizations. The adults were TOO terrible, the allies were TOO trusting (especially Dayo, who has as much spine as a wet paper towel), and as the story progresses, the protagonist becomes WAY too powerful, to the point of incredulity.

To paraphrase a recurring theme from the book: I loved the idea of the thing more than the thing itself.
