This is a short story that seems to be set in the same world of ghosts and witches and creatures from Hell as the Last Apprentice series, but Tom Ward and his friends are nowhere in sight. Instead this is the story of an orphan boy named Billy Calder who is assigned to work the night shift in a haunted prison. It is the type of story you tell around a campfire when you want to give someone a really good scare. But if, like me, you were wondering if this had any tie-ins to the larger series, the answer is no.
I really should read the rest of the Last Apprentice books sometime soon, but I need to finish the new Dresden Files book first.
