I couldn't get into this, so I checked Goodreads reviews to see what I was missing, and they were pretty sharply divided, with several saying that the story didn't pick up until the narration started showing things from Baz's perspective, in addition to Simon's. So I skipped ahead a bunch and tried again, but ultimately I just didn't enjoy it. Which is weird, because I usually love fantasy and I enjoyed Rowell's other, decidedly non-fantasy stories. Maybe it's that the spells were so ridiculous and mundane, or maybe there was too much self-destructive angst in the romance. For whatever reason, it wasn't my cup of tea. I couldn't even muster up a proper love/hate for it like I did Lev Grossman's Magicians trilogy, which it resembles in some respects.
