bookretorts selection for Retold Fairy Tales month. I'm not sure these are retellings so much as feminist deconstructions. On the one hand, I liked that the villain of one tale was often the hero of the next one. On the other hand, the men in these stories are unvaryingly portrayed as weak at best or cruel at worst, often objectified, never sympathetic, and always, above all, Other. The only relationships allowed to have any depth or complexity are between women. I'm sure that was the author's intent, but I didn't find the result to be very attractive.
