kareila: a lady in glasses holding a stack of books (books)

I read the first four chapters, skipped to the end, and gave up. This is not a condemnation of the novel so much as an indication of my lack of available reading time and the fact that someone else at the library is waiting for me to return it.

That said, it definitely did not draw me in the way the first book did. Details of the plot felt forced in certain directions in order to fit the found photographs, instead of flowing organically around them. What little character development was found in the first four chapters also felt forced in every time the characters had a few moments to take a breath before running for their lives again. Overall, the tone of the book felt much darker, like the existence of an entire society was at stake instead of a few lives here and there.

I will pick this book up again when the third book comes out. I still care about the characters and want to give it another chance.
