I tried to write a story once, a short story, as a class assignment when I was 16 years old. It was about a boy who makes a choice that results in tragedy befalling a sibling, combined with the discovery that he is living in a virtual reality - that what he thought was "real life" is a simulation, with a limited ability to change the immediate past and make a different choice.
This book is that same story, but better than I could ever have told it.
