It is possible to read this book without being spoiled for the movie, but it has so little bearing on the events of the movie that I'm not even sure it counts as a prequel. Basically it's a pure distillation of the truism "the future is here, it's just not evenly distributed yet." What if Tesla invented the atom bomb at the turn of the previous century, flattening part of Siberia in the process, just to punch a hole to another dimension? The whole thing is pretty far fetched, but if you don't think about it too hard, it's about as much fun as your average Indiana Jones movie. Most of the action takes place in July 1939, which means there are Nazis and zeppelins.
