kareila: a lady in glasses holding a stack of books (books)

I did not realize when I picked this up that it was first in a series that isn't finished yet, but for once I find that I don't mind. This is my first Django Wexler book and allegedly his first foray into YA. I enjoyed it so much that I want to seek out his other books and see if they are at all similar.

This story checks off a lot of the same boxes that the Valdemar books did for me, back before they dropped off the cliff of self-indulgence. There is a system of magic, nine wells of sorcery that can be used to do various amazing things. There is an entire society of mageborn teens and young adults, most of whom were cast out by their families for having unnatural powers. Some of them, including the protagonist, are LGBT. There are battles to be won and mysteries to be solved. These are a few of my favorite things.
