I'm really enjoying this compilation of essays from various crafters about how much yarn they stash (or don't) and why. Some are whimsical, some are deeply touching, and some are merely philosophical. Most follow a similar path: buying a lot when first starting out, then becoming more discerning as time goes on. Many will keep yarn that reminds them of a specific person or experience, even if they have no intention of using it. And at least one person uses the term "yarn pet" to describe a beautiful skein that is kept solely for admiration and inspiration, which tickles me to no end.
One writer shares statistics from Ravelry, including the fact that only 5% of Ravelry users use the site to track their stash inventory. I count myself in that 5%. I have roughly 257 varieties of yarn currently in my stash, but at least half of those are partially used up. I definitely appreciate being able to start immediately on a project when I have an idea for one, instead of having to drive 20 minutes to the nearest craft store during business hours, or wait days for the post office to bring me an online order. And I keep my collection fairly well organized, mostly contained in a corner of my bedroom next to my sewing machine table.
Yes, I am definitely happy with my yarn stash. Just don't ask me how I feel about my pile of unfinished projects... that would be a subject for a much less cheerful book.
