The main characters in the first book were new girl Nancy, her roommate Sumi, and Sumi's friends Kade and Jack. This prequel is all about Jack, her sister Jill, and their lives before they came to live at Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children. Since we got the gist of their backstory in the first book, this feels like an unnecessary detour. I wanted to know what happened next, not before.
Also, I think I have finally twigged to what is bugging me about this series (apart from the gruesome bits). It's full of Judgey McJudgeface judgements about terrible parents who can't accept their children for who they are. They're more in the background in the first book, but the first few chapters of this book are tediously Nothing But. Come to think of it, terrible parents were a theme in October Daye and Newsflesh as well, but not to such an obnoxious degree.
