kareila: a lady in glasses holding a stack of books (books)

I don't want to sell this book short by saying it is Harry Potter meets The Hunger Games but I simply can't think of a more apt comparison. It's a story about teenage magic students who are willing to attend an autonomously maintained wizard school where only about one in four students are expected to survive to graduate, because if they don't go to the school and learn how to use their magic, their survival odds are significantly worse.

For at least the first couple of chapters, I didn't think that I was going to enjoy this book, but the main character gradually grew on me. She's a total bitch, but only because her potential for dark magic is so apparent to everyone she's ever met that the only person who has ever been kind to her is her own mother. And yet, she's utterly determined not to turn away from the light, not even to save her own life. Her repeated refusals to take the easy way out of anything redeem her less admirable qualities.
