This was well-written, jumping between viewpoints in an unpredictable way, but it was ultimately pretty depressing. I get the impression that many people were lured in by a blurb promising comforting found-family tropes, and this was not comforting at all.
I think maybe it's actually about the fact that capitalism is inescapably grinding our lives into dust? That it inevitably wins, no matter how we try to cheat? That may even be true, but it's not what I want to believe.
