kareila: a lady in glasses holding a stack of books (books)

Another book club selection, another World War II story. Although the subject of Hedy Lamarr promised to be an interesting one, it ultimately failed to live up to that promise, mostly because Benedict's writing style irritated me immensely. The story is told in first person, but with a detached point of view that removed any sense of immediacy from the proceedings, and the dialogue was fairly clunky to boot. The author also doesn’t shy away from downbeat endings, relying on a short epilogue to provide any sense of closure.
