The first 70% of this middle novel is fairly tedious and mostly boring. Kordas is organizing and protecting the convoy of refugees as they travel deeper into the unknown in search of a suitable place to settle. The other main character, his young sister-in-law Delia, is assisting the advance scout party and further honing the use of her Fetching gift. Occasionally they get attacked by wild creatures corrupted by magic.
Not much actually happens until they finally find somewhere they can at least stop for the winter. But as soon as they do, the Hawkbrothers of the k’Vesla clan introduce themselves. And that's when things finally start falling into place.
I did want to throw the book once, when early on in the story, a magic device is used to provide what is essentially prime time TV for the refugee camp, complete with captions.
