I somehow ended up with second-hand copies of the first four books in this series without having read any of them, although the fact that I didn't hate And Another Thing reassured me in that regard.
I ended up mainly skimming this story. It never really grabbed me, and I suspect the reason is that it's made clear at the outset that there is no moral conflict here. Artemis Fowl's motivations are selfish, his thought processes are opaque, and the supporting characters, while charming, ultimately can't compensate for my lack of interest in the main character.
However, I'm hopeful that the series may get more interesting in later installments - similar to the evolution of the Dresden Files series, which didn't gain traction until book three - so I'm not giving up on Artemis just yet.
