The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates doesn't have much to do with the plot of this fun and whimsical story, although it is a pretty good name for a series of books. Unfortunately for the VNHLP, they refuse to accept girls as apprentices, and forward young Hilary's application for admittance to Miss Pimm's Finishing School for Delicate Ladies instead. But Hilary, the only child of a self-absorbed naval captain, is destined for piracy, and flees the school to join the crew of a self-styled "freelance" pirate with a mysterious agenda. Will she succeed in her quest to recover a magical treasure, or will "polite society" succeed in recapturing her and forcing her into a life of respectability? Perhaps the outcome is never really in doubt, but there are several surprises along the way!
This promises to be a delightful series, a cross between The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place and Pirates of the Caribbean. It's too soon to tell if there will be an overall story arc; the first book is rather self-contained, although it does set "hooks" for the next installment. (You'll understand why that's a pun once you've read the book.)
