kareila: a lady in glasses holding a stack of books (books)

I did like the second book better. There are still some determinedly demented pop culture references that jerk me out of the story, but they are less frequent here. While the first book reads like some sort of interstellar Mission Impossible, the plot here reminds me more of that beloved space western Firefly: the two most developed characters, Mops and Wolf, are a lot like Mal and Jayne, and there's a galactic Alliance that is hiding some shady misdeeds that our heroes are determined to uncover.

In brief, we are initially told that 150 years ago, aliens visiting Earth accidentally caused a plague that turned all of humanity into feral monsters. The aliens were very embarrassed about this and returned some time later to try curing batches of humans as best they could, bringing back their intelligence but retaining other side effects of the plague such as quick healing and insensitivity to pain, conveniently making them ideal soldiers for the aliens' purposes. Although Mops and her crew were assigned to sanitation duty, their resilience and resourcefulness make them a force to be reckoned with despite their lack of combat training.

The cured humans were raised to believe that they owed the aliens everything. Once they learn about the conspiracy that the aliens are hiding, that's when things get interesting.
