I've gradually been trying to learn more about various Marvel characters and wasn't sure where to start with Squirrel Girl until I saw this chapter book in the juvenile fiction section of the library. While it doesn't exactly explain where her powers come from (her parents take her abilities in stride so I guess they're a particularly forceful expression of a family genetic trait?) it does provide a hero origin story, as she evolves from a peculiar 14 year old girl into a force for justice. The story is a bit simplistic (it is JF, after all) but the characters are great. Two hysterical highlights stuck out for me: the listing of the increasingly ridiculous names of every squirrel in the neighborhood (at least two pages long and probably tortuous to endure in audiobook form), and the interactions between Squirrel Girl and various other Marvel superheroes. The text message thread with Tony Stark and the Winter Soldier in particular is pure gold.
