So I took a break from reading for a while, not only to rewatch most of the MCU movies but also because, no joke, my favorite local library closed - temporarily. It's reopening in a new, larger building in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I've renewed my card for the city library system, and this was my first find there.
I got it because of the cover, of course, featuring a fierce black girl standing with her friends in the midst of a zombie rabbit uprising. How could you not? The story turns out to be the charming adventures of someone who is growing up in a dangerous, fictional New Mexico town called Oddity that can't be located very far from Night Vale - the town is governed by living puppets, ghosts haunt abandoned houses, dumpsters are known to try to eat people, and there is a long running feud between the zombie rabbits and the smaller aliens over something called Punkball. The protagonist is Ada, a seasoned shit-stirrer whose mission in life, aside from surviving fifth grade, is to find out what happened to her twin sister, Pearl, who disappeared after winning the town's yearly Sweepstakes. It manages to be both light-hearted and creepy at the same time. I loved it, and was surprised to learn that it is the author's first published book.
