This is the second of five planned books in yet another series about Greek/Roman/other demigods and former immortals. Apollo and Calypso are the latter, and over the course of the story they continue to come to terms with their changed status and recover a small measure of their former powers. Calypso's boyfriend, Leo Valdez, and Apollo's companion, Meg McCaffrey, are rather more powerful demigods, but even their powers are tested by the monsters and villains allied against them in a quest for world domination. Apparently the worst of the Roman emperors gained a kind of shadow immortality through the same powers of culture and memory that sustain the gods. Apollo's quest is to regain control of the five ancient Oracles of prophecy; once this is accomplished, he believes he will regain his godhood.

Honestly, I had a hard time slogging through this story; a lot of fighting happens, but not much plot or character development, at least until the very end. Apollo discovers the site of the Oracle of Trophonius in Indianapolis, and has to come to terms with the fact that he has not been the world's best father to many of his children, including Trophonius. He initially scorns anyone who is willing to give up their immortality willingly, but he slowly discovers the value of mortal life, and when tested, finds that he is willing to sacrifice himself for Meg. He's already grown a great deal from the pampered brat we met at the beginning of the first book.

At the end of the story, another prophecy is retrieved; Leo flies west to Camp Jupiter while Apollo and Meg prepare to travel through the Labyrinth to the site of the third Oracle, somewhere in the American Southwest.
