kareila: a lady in glasses holding a stack of books (books)

Kane wakes up from a car accident with no idea what happened. The police suspect him of trying to burn down the building he crashed into, but a friendly counselor shows up at the police station to convince the authorities that he's just a troubled kid who needs some time to try to regain his memories. He eventually returns to his high school, where he has no friends because he's the only openly gay kid.

Then it gets weird. Shapes are creeping in the shadows. A girl he remembers picking on as a kid is acting like she suddenly cares about him. He finds photos in his room of events he doesn't remember. Just when he starts to think he really is losing his mind... the magic starts!

I picked this up on a whim because it was being promoted as this fall's "Big Read" at my local libraries, and I'm pleasantly surprised that they chose such a very LGBTQ book. In addition to the main character being gay, the counselor is flamboyantly queer as well, and that's just for starters. Although the story starts off seeming like a teen drama of the "something terrible happened and everyone is lying about it" variety, it quickly morphs into a story of finding power in your pain, of being able to stay lucid when the world changes around you because you never fit in with your world to start with.
