Not entirely unlike the Chrestomanci books - there are wizards tasked with keeping the multiverse from running off the rails, and they need protegés who seem to inevitably have terrible family members - but not nearly as charming in tone or character. My opinion was soured about halfway through the story by an inexplicable amount of fatphobia repeatedly directed at an extremely minor character, and subsequent events did not improve it.
