My best guess is that this story takes place several weeks after Exit Strategy and several months before Network Effect. Murderbot (aka SecUnit, because referring to oneself as Murderbot makes people understandably nervous) is living with the members of its team on Preservation Station and adjusting to life outside the Corporation Rim. Its current main source of complaint: the crappy quality of surveillance on the station, and the general inexperience of the station's security staff when faced with any sort of serious threat. But when evidence of a murder is discovered on the station, SecUnit is hired by the security staff as an investigative consultant, and personal growth happens... maybe? Of course, SecUnit doesn't care about that sort of thing, it just wants its humans to stay not dead in the least annoying way possible.
I recently wrote to a friend who failed to finish the first book of this series, explaining why I enjoy it so much: "I love Murderbot's snarky, sarcastic inner voice, and its character journey as it figures out how to be a person with relationships instead of an automaton with masters." And the author recently announced that she signed a contract to write three more Murderbot books, so I happily look forward to those, especially since I really want to know what happens after Network Effect.
