I don't know whether it's because this book is at its heart a repudiation of Lovecraft, whom I've never read and never wanted to, or whether it's because this book is on its surface a love letter to NYC and I self-identify as a Bostonian, but I did not connect with this book, at all. It's not necessarily bad, it's just not for me.

I wondered if the author originally intended this book to be a standalone, then got a contract for a trilogy and rewrote the ending. Pure speculation on my part, of course, but it's exactly what she did to the previously published short story that was included here as prologue. In any event, I share your disappointment.
